Working from home is becoming more and more common place. Whether this is stuffing envelopes, proof reading or as an e-business the number of people working from home is growing with people’s needs for flexibility. In response, companies are becoming more flexible with their employees and more businesses are being run from home.
To work from home has many positives. It allows us to ease the daily pressures of the commute, see the special moments with the family or simply to ensure lower costs whilst setting up that dream home business. This is why the idea of working from home appeals to so many. However, what many forget to consider is the practical elements. But when you do work from home best laid plans can become disrupted as distractions become common place, productivity goes through the floor and you don’t make the progress that you had planned or hoped for. For this reason people fail at working from home and eventually give up.
What many people fail to realise when they work from home is, like most things in life, you need to train yourself to be able to do something – especially to be good at it. It is a big change for most people. Whether you chose to or not you had a schedule to follow. You had habits that you adhered to. This may have meant you had to be in the office by 9am or at the depot by 2pm to the afternoon shift. Either way you had that schedule. Now, you don’t! You need to reinvent yourself and the way in which you work.
You need to generate this yourself to give you (and your company) some direction and boundaries. Simple things become more important when you are trying to earn that extra income from home. Ironically, tasks like having a ‘To Do’ list, regular breaks and a regular ‘work area’ are both the things you are trying to gain more of or avoid when you work from home but are essentials in you becoming successful at it too.
It is important to remember that although you are now working from home and you have an element of freedom that you now use this as a positive, not as a reason to have ‘extra time off’. A major advantage to this way of life is you can fit your work around your lifestyle and NOT your lifestyle around your work. Recognise when your natural ‘productive’ times are and start to use them. These times may be in the evening or even at 5am but these are the times you need to work. By working when you are more productive you are becoming more efficient. You achieve more in a shorter period of time and can earn a better income. All this whilst doing less. Imagine!!
As well as working around your natural highs you get to organise around your other responsibilities too. These may be your children, just walking the dog or simply going to the gym. By taking all of these things into consideration at the same time and creating ‘YOUR’ schedule you can get the most out of the time you use to work from home. This leaves you to enjoy the rest of the time you have earned to enjoy the things you enjoy. When you start to structure the way that is best for you there is more freedom for you enjoy your life and your work in unison to create a better overall lifestyle.
