As you sit in your cubicle, head to meetings, and deal with a know-it-all boss, working at home can seem like the perfect way to work without getting frustrated or stressed out. But, whether you simply want to convince your boss to let you work from home or you want to start your own business, working at home presents several challenges.
Before you give up that cubicle, take a look at these 6 pitfalls – and see if you’re likely to fall victim to any of them:
1. You may feel isolated.
There are no other co-workers to talk to or go to lunch with. There’s no break room to head to. Sure, you’re at home – but you’re also by yourself.
2. Your paycheck isn’t guaranteed.
If you’re starting your own business, there’s no promise of money rolling in. Some months may be very profitable; others, not so much. And, if you’re your own boss, there’s no paid sick time or vacation time. When you work at home as your own boss, time really is money!
3. You’ll need a lot of self-discipline.
When you’re working at home, there are plenty of reasons not to work – like your favorite soap opera that comes on in the middle of the day or that pile of laundry that needs to be done. There’s no boss sitting there, telling you to get to work. If you can’t motivate yourself, you’ll never get anything done.
4. You’ll need tunnel vision.
It’s not all about disciplining yourself; you also need to drown out the distractions around you. You may be the most motivated person in the world, but if you can’t tune out the screaming kids or the barking dog, working at home isn’t for you.
5. You won’t be able to escape the office.
Think back to a really frustrating day you had at the office. What did you do to feel better? Clock out early and head home? When you work at home, home is work! You can’t just jump in the car, drive home, and escape – because you’re already home!
And, you’ll see work stuff sitting around everywhere. Even if you have a home office, work stuff will likely make its way to other parts of the house – meaning you may never feel like you’ve truly left the office.
6. You may never really feel “off the clock”.
Many people who work at home wind up working more hours than they ever did in an office. After all, it’s just too easy to head back upstairs to check email or finish that one last project. In an office, when you leave for the day, you leave for the day. But at home, you may discover you’re putting in extra time you never would have put in at the office – simply because it’s so accessible.
